The upstairs living area has a open fireplace, with views of the garden, and fells beyond. A short flight of stairs takes you down to the spacious bedroom. Part of a secluded former 17th century farmstead tucked into the fellside on the western side of Newlands Valley, where iron was smelted even before the Industrial Revolution, the cottage is an ideal base to tour from. A mile away is the market town of Ulverston which is widely known as the birthplace of Stan Laurel (the Laurel and Hardy museum is well worth a visit) and also as the birthplace of Sir John Barrow. The Sir John Barrow monument overlooks the town and is a replica of the Eddystone lighthouse built in 1850. Ulverston has a good selection of pubs, restaurants, cinema, theatre and leisure centre. Also within easy reach is South Lakes Wildlife Park, Coniston Water, Newby Bridge and the bottom tip of Lake Windermere, Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway, Holker Hall, The Lakeland Motor Museum, and Grizedale Forest. Barrow in Furness is only 10 miles away where you will find The Dock Museum, Furness Abbey, Indoor go karting, and nature reserves. |
